Adelaide introduces world's largest rotating seating platform

SOUTH AUSTRALIA’s capital of Adelaide is proving to be a potential frontrunner for MICE tourism following a breakthrough rotating seating platform at the Adelaide Convention Centre’s new East Building.

The platform is the world’s largest of its kind, comprising two 18m-revolving drums that can be rotated 180 degrees within minutes. This means the building can be quickly reconfigured for various types of events, conferences, and meetings.

The rotating drums can seat up to 320 people, while the entire East Building can accommodate up to 3,500 guests.

“The redeveloped Adelaide Convention Centre will provide Adelaide with another premium facility to attract visitors and promote South Australia,” South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said.

Meanwhile, Adelaide Convention Centre chief executive officer Alec Gilbert said last year, “New technologies are the hallmark of the AUD400 million (US$302 million) expansion, which will set a new benchmark in convention center design and functionality.”

Much of the South Australian capital’s MICE industry is facilitated by the Adelaide Convention Bureau.

Australia’s business events industry is mushrooming with 10,000 delegates targeted to visit the country this year from all over Asia.

“The latest industry analysis of bids by Australian cities to host international conventions, exhibitions, incentives and meetings showed convention bureaux have secured 360 international business events across the forward calendar,” Association of Australia Convention Bureau chief executive Andrew Hiebl said.

He said revenue from business events can be increased and will prove valuable for the national economy.
